Water Water Water

Well over the years Boogie has given me a few surprises when it comes to water. As a foal he was always playing in the dugout. He would walk in and start splashing water all over. I guess he got this from his mom as she would also do this. He also trying rolling in the water once or twice but that didn't really work out for him so he stuck to rolling in the mud instead.

As he grew up I just naturally assumed that since he went freely into water that when I rode him he would also freely go into water. Well we have had a few incidents that I can remember.

One time when Boogie was still a young stud, I was out riding with my friends and it had been a really wet spring. There was water in the ditches and the fields were very muddy and lots of sloughs. We came to a field that looked fairly dry so we were going to cross the ditch and go in the field. This meant walking through about 4 inches of water that was about 3 feet across. Well Boogie took one look at the water and said no way was he going to drown! Now the other horses went across and were standing there waiting for the big brave stud to follow. Nope! He sniffed it, pawed it and wouldn't go in it. Ok fine we will stand here all day until you decide to go across the water. Well we stood for awhile and I would keep asking him to move across. Finally he decided to take the plunge, so to say and gathered himself up and leaped across it. Yikes! I almost went over his back end as I was not expect a standing jump! Sheesh time to work on some water training.

So the next or so I saddled up again and headed for some puddles. Well no problem! You want to walk in these puddles, sure lets get wet. Boogie would walk, trot and splash through any puddle I aimed him at! Well then smarty pants I know of a pretty big puddle (can we say huge water deposit in the back field). I headed Boogie for it and in he went..

Right into the middle and thenI stopped and stood there and figured well there was nothing to this water training. Then Boogie made a couple of splashes with his front leg and started to lower himself into the water! No No No, Bad Boogie! We are not going to go for a swim today!

Then there was the time we were on our big annual cattle drive (not like the real cowboys just a bunch of us following the herd who knew how to get home) and near the end of the drive was a big slough. Some of the cows decided they needed a drink and walked out in the middle of it. It wasn't very deep but it was pretty wide. I waded in after them on Boogie and the water was just around his knees. Boogie thought this was ok and was just standing there when I looked over and saw another ride galloping towards up with full intentions of getting us all wet!! I tried to make Boogie hurry up and get out of the way but he was not in the mood to run out of the water and slowly started walking out and we ended up getting quite wet! Morgans! They will keep you guessing.
